This album establishes its mood straight from the first track. We are very much in gothic gloomscape territory here, with resonant bass lines and sparse keyboards, before the tempo picks up for the second track and we hear Robert Smith’s plaintive, wailing vocals. The lyrical themes are also very much towards the darker end of the spectrum, especially on the spooky hit single A Forest. The definitive proto-goth album!
