Screwing things up

Loyal readers (both of you) will recall that the shower door has been wonky for some time, and finally gave up the ghost for good the other week. We had a little man in to look at it and, after sucking his teeth in the time honoured fashion, he went away and sent us a quote for seven hundred of your finest English pounds. Strewth.

Plan B then was to look at replacement cubicles in various DIY shops, and with a bit of measuring up found that there were ones that would fit our existing shower tray. I was quite taken by a £2,500 model that included remote controls, lights and speakers for an mp3 player, but maybe that will wait until we have the whole bathroom redone professionally at some future date. After a bit of umming and ahing, we settled for a simple model with a pivot door from B&Q and were pleasantly surprised when it priced up at the till as £89, reduced from £220 - back of the net!

Now comes the tricky bit, fitting the thing.

The first task was getting the existing panel and frame out, which wasn't too bad, but getting the silicone sealant off of the tiles involved another trip out to B&Q for a tube of expensive gunk to dissolve it and then quite a lot of elbow grease to finish the job.

Fitting the cubicle itself involved some tricky drilling through tiles by Jan to fit the brackets on the wall and then lining up the door and the panel in position, only to find that it didn't quite fit into the lip of the tray. Hmmmm. I took a gamble and removed a bit of the trim from the bottom of the corner pillar with a hacksaw, and fortunately it then all fitted snugly into place. Once all of the various screws had been tightened it all seemed secure, and it looks great.

That must leave you with a feeling of great satisfaction! I have yet to experience that feeling from a home repair project. If I have anything to do with it, that is. Mark is pretty competent. Anyway, congratulations. Now can you rig up speakers for your mp3 player?
