Nempimania

The trip to Brum today was my first opportunity to see what the fuel consumption of the Prius was like on the motorway. The consumption display shows an immediate fuel consumption gauge and a more useful rolling average graph at five minute intervals for the last half hour. Driving at average motorway speeds of 60 - 70 mph seems to return 50mpg or thereabouts. Using the hypermiler pulse and glide technique seems to help as well - it's very satisfying to see the consumption bar shoot up to 99.9 mpg when you take your foot off the accelerator.

The traffic was bad today, but the stop start conditions and average speeds of 20 - 30 mph were ideal conditions for the hybrid engine and at some points the graph was averaging out at 75mpg or more. It will be interesting to do a proper calculation the next time I fill up to measure the average over a full tank of petrol.

I had an annoying phone call today. I was in a meeting and the number on the display looked like one of our London offices so I excused myself to take the call. The voice on the other end said something about bank charges that momentarily flummoxed me - was she talking about getting a report out of the accounts system to analyse banking costs or something. She then said it was my personal bank charges she was talking about and I twigged what was going on. It was a cold sales call, so I told her that I had not incurred any bank charges in the last six years, that she should delete me from her system and if they tried calling again they would be liable for legal action from the TPS.

What a lovely car! I wish we'd been in the position to consider one when we upgraded the 12-year-old pickup to a Mazda recently. With fuel prices so high, we probably would have made back the extra cost in no time!

I hate sales calls. Here, if you just tell them you don't accept phone solicitation and please remove your name from their list, they're legally obligated to do it. Or so they say. It does shut them up quickly, anyway.
