The Way of Bushido

We have been studying the Jo Stick for about three months now, so as is the way with such things today it was time to be graded. We waited for a while whilst the Ju Jitsu students finished their tests and were presented with their certificates, and then we went in to get changed.

Fortunately, Rachel and I were able to go into the side room to get on with our grading first with no additional time to worry about it. The first time through we both stumbled on one or two things, and then we asked to go through it again with more speed and intensity, and the second time proved to be the charm, with everything flowing much more smoothly.

We then went back into the main dojo, and ran through our drills a few more times and watched the sword students going through their gradings - a very useful opportunity to see what we will be doing in six months or so when we study that weapon. Sensei Elliot also encouraged us to develop interests in other aspects of Samurai life, including flower arranging and tea ceremonies.

Finally, we lined up to await our grades, and the long and the short is that we both passed with credit - not bad for the first time grading at anything like this.

Yawara sticks next!
