Let's go to work ...

After a lazy and indulgent break without picking up a sword for almost a month I was feeling more than a little creaky this morning. The warm up session produced even more creaks and pops from unused joints and muscles, but it set us up nicely for some work on the good old eight position parry sequence. We then added in random full intent attacks and ripostes to spice things up a little before switching to left hands for a while and then finishing with some freeplay alternating left and right handed usage. Excellent fun.

Lunch next, and then a switch of mindset to sabre with controlled, snappy ripostes and some memory jogging drills to get back into the feel of the weapon. The final session of the afternoon split us into two groups with half practicing backsword in anticipation of SWASH next weekend and the other half getting stuck into some seriously nasty close quarters cutlass work. We concentrated on using your blade as a defensive shield whilst you step inside your opponents guard and then use either your point or your pommel to hit a suitable target (back of neck, throat, eye socket or elbow) and then carrying forward to skewer your now prone enemy. Absolutely, totally and completely ACEBEST.

Roll on next weekend!
