2025 in Blogging

There's been a noticeable jump in page views this year - 146k compared to 37.2k last year. The biggest spike was on the 3rd of November but I can't see an obvious cause.

The most popular posts tended to be my con reports, helped by boosts from the organisers. Haiku posts with pictures did well, so perhaps I should try to include more.

The most fascinating (and puzzling) stat is the number of views from Singapore - hello to all of you Singaporeans!

2025 in Health

I had something of a wakeup call at the end of 2024 when I was officially weighed as part of a health assessment and clocked in at 87.5 kg. Perhaps I should have realised sooner that my suit trousers were all too tight to wear comfortably, but seeing it in black and white on a printout was undeniable evidence.

I resolved to do something about it and started tracking my food with the NHS Weight Loss app as well as increasing the amount of walking I was doing. I tracked my results using the health log on my phone and I'm now not far off being under a BMI of 25 for the first time in over ten years.

Fortunately my bi-annual bowel scan (one of the joys of being over sixty) came back clear, but in less positive news my left knee started giving me problems. After a weekend at UK Games Expo where I must have walked a fair distance and a trip to our Bedford office, I felt a distinct twinge followed by the joint swelling up to the point I could hardly bend my leg. A trip to the doctor followed by X-rays at the hospital confirmed that I now have stage 3 osteoarthritis in that joint with the cartilage being noticeably worn.

Fortunately I seem to have reasonably strong muscles from years of iaido practice which protects me from the worst of the pain. I've recently had a physio assessment with a couple of new exercises to work on to maintain strength in that joint and I can continue with iaido as long as I am cautious.

My health resolutions are basically to carry on on the same track as above, ideally getting my weight to 75 kg and improving my upper body strength as well.

Let's see what 2026 holds!

2025 in TTRPG

I played in 97 TTRPG sessions this year - didn't quite make the 100 but I think it was definitely a good year. My personal highlight was playing in the epic multi-table Gatsby and the Great Race which I wrote about here. A weekend at our UK Games Expo fringe event came a close second as well as the usual compliment of Garrison cons and Owlbear. Online saw me running The King of Santa Fe campaign for the Wednesday group as well as regular games of Dungeon Crawl Classics, Advanced Fighting Fantasy, Forbidden Lands and the number one slot is taken by Dragonbane.

I played 25 different one shots too - most of them new to me:
  • Be Like A Cat
  • Cthulhu by Gaslight
  • Cthulhu Dark
  • Cypher System
  • Dagonbane
  • Dead Metal Rhapsody
  • Delta Green
  • Dialect
  • Golden Heroes
  • Ironsworn Starforged
  • Kaiju Fighting
  • Laundry Files
  • Liminal
  • Lost Unicorn Star Trek
  • Maelstrom
  • Marvel Heroic Roleplaying
  • Rivers of London
  • Ronin
  • Spirit of '77
  • Star Trek Adventures
  • Starfinder
  • Tales from the Loop
  • The Agency
  • Traveller
  • Wildsea

2025 in Books

So, that makes a total of 32 books this year (slightly up on last year) with an average page count of 333, of which 12 were part of The Grognard Files book club. As usual, I've tracked these in a spreadsheet for a little bit of analysis. Book of the year was probably The Inimitable Jeeves by PG Wodehouse which made me laugh out loud numerous times at the deliciously constructed farcical tales.
