The Grognard Files podcast was responsible both for re-igniting my interest in roleplaying games after emerging from my personal deep freeze back in 2015 and also for connecting me with some of the loveliest people around to play games with at the annual Grogmeet conventions in Manchester. The podcast is hosted by Chris Hart, otherwise known by his roleplaying soubriquet of Dirk the Dice, aided by co-host and lifelong friend Blythy. The pair bring amiable charm to proceedings as they talk bobbins about games from back in the day and today, as well as in depth interviews with gaming luminaries from around the world.
The latest episode features a fascinating discussion with Magnus Seter about the history of role playing games in Sweden which was of particular interest to me. Looking at my gaming over recent years shows that things like Dragonbane, Vaesen and Tales from the Loop from the Swedish company Free League have loomed large. They seem to have a unique charm and quirkiness that things like D&D (at least in its current incarnation) are lacking for me. This also reminds me that I really need to find an opportunity to play Mutant : Year Zero at some point - ironically one of the few Year Zero engine games that I have yet to play.
I highly recommend that you give this episode a listen, then explore the previous ten years (helpfully summarised here), and maybe I'll see you at a Grogmeet one day!
