Still Wakes the Deep

This game is set in 1975 aboard a North Sea oil rig, the Berra D. You play as Caz McCleary, a Glaswegian electrician who has taken an offshore job to get away from a spot of bother back home only to find that things are about to get a whole lot worse. The tyrannical rig boss Renwick has his card marked and is about to sack McCleary when a panicky report of trouble with the drill comes in and the platform is rocked with explosions and even stranger things. Caz now finds himself in a race against time to save the rig and his fellow workers and friends, whilst confronting the problems in his life that he has run away from.

The story is mostly linear as you make your way through different parts of the rig as the situation rapidly deteriorates. You have interactions with different crew members as well as flash back memories to your relationship with your partner that you have left back home. The voice acting is all top notch, with a healthy amount of realistically salty language and a conclusion that is genuinely heart rending.

The game is from developers Chinese Room who were responsible for Everybody's Gone To The Rapture, and this game has the same stunningly realised sense of place and time, but where that game had the hedgerows and quaint village houses of the English countryside, this one is on a rusty, storm lashed rig where you can almost smell the salt air and the oil.
