Of moles and mortality

I was walking Barney on our usual route when I spotted something unusual at the side of the path. At first glance I thought it might be a dead rat, but closer inspection showed that it was actually a mole - a thick, cylindrical body covered in chocolate coloured, velvety fur, a long pink snout and astonishing digging claws on its front paws. It's the first time I've ever seen one up close, outside of a nature documentary. I took it home in a bag so that the rest of the family could see it too, before disposing of the body in the bin so that the cats weren't tempted to play with it.

I know it's just nature red in tooth and claw and all that (literally in this case, as one of the unfortunate creatures back paws had been chewed off), but I still felt oddly sad. Ah well. Rest in peace, little mole.
