- Film I didn't go to the cinema all that much this year. Some films that I had been looking forward to (Spiderman 3 and Golden Compass) turned out to be turkeys, so I didn't bother with them. Out of the DVDs that I watched, 300 was the definite high point. A blood soaked ballet of truly epic proportions
- Book This was certainly the year of the audio book, thanks to audible.com and my trusty Creative Zen. The choice for the best is a close run thing with Lisey's Story by Stephen King and The Steep Approach to Garbadale by Iain Banks being strong contenders, but the winner has to be Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami, not least for the superb audio adaptation.
- TV Heroes was good, but lost something in the second season, Doctor Who series 3 was, to quote David Tennants 'Brrrilliant!' while Torchwood was disappointing and The Sarah Jane Adventures an excellent little show. We are halfway through The Sopranos (one of the benefits of digital telly being complete reruns of classic series like this), and we still have the rest of The Wire to watch. Harry Hill's TV Burp is pure genius, and his commentary on You've Been Framed is a guilty pleasure, but the best TV of the year was Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe which turns a laser beam gaze on the whole sorry spectacle.
- Music Favourite Worst Nightmare by the Arctic Monkeys has the honour of being loaded onto every media server and mp3 player in the house, including the Xbox 360.
- Sport This was the year I reached the level of Adept in Rapier, and also got to spend some quality time with sabre and cutlass. My personal highlight though was discovering the art and discipline of Kobudo, grading in Jo, Yari-bo and Sai, with sword to complete the set for level one.
- Alcohol St Peter's Organic Ale, in the special medicine bottle style bottles. Lovely.
- Games Gosh, it's been a excellent year for games, with an Xbox 360 and Wii making guest appearances under the telly. Highlights include Phoenix Wright, Zelda : Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock and Halo 3, but the surprise winner was Portal. Short, sweet and superb, not least for the music over the end credits.
- Low points of the year Friends being injured, my dad being ill, various blogging friends going through hard times, the Sheffield floods and Biddy the Cat passing away. I still miss her.
- High points The formal dinner and antique weapons of SWASH, being on the winning crew at Tortuga, grading in both Eastern and Western martial arts, going to TV's Emma Kennedy's swit-swoo book launch party
and finally meeting the wonderful Creepy Lesbo. The all round high point though, has to be getting to the end of the year happy, healthy, secure and loved, and with a ginger kitten who purrs when she sees me
May 2008 be a good year for us all!
