A spectacular start to the day this morning.
I was driving through thick fog, but as I crested the ridge before dropping down into Oughtibridge I broke through the murk into bright sunshine and saw the whole valley filled with a perfect layer of cloud under a temperature inversion. It was like the view that you get looking out of a plane window at 30,000 feet, except for the tips of the trees poking through in places. It was a fleeting glance but stunningly beautiful all the same.
The other end of the day was similarly good. Fencing was a little quieter than last week, but that gave us the chance to do some problem solving of how to make effective use of off hand weapons without falling back into the comfort zone of the Di Grassi four square defence. After the break we looked at some techniques for cutlass against boarding pike and bayonet, before some excellent and punishing freeplay with rapier and sabre. Good fun all round, I think.
